![]() ![]() On to the most important business of the day. I’m playing with single board computers (not just for GPS) now thinking they along with open source software will provide additional GPs options among other things for my future needs. Technology is advancing too quickly for standalone devices to last much longer in many applications. Having said that, with Garmin’s lackadaisical attitude and proprietary interfaces I can’t see staying with their devices/software once my current devices are obsolete. The Montana is an excellent GPS for my current needs. Most probably don’t need or use all of the functionality Basecamp has and the user interface is a little complicated and clunky.īasecamp is a powerful tool that can store and organize all your GPS stuff but it takes some effort in the front end to figure it out and get it set up. Established naming conventions help a lot keeping things organized. I do spend extra time to pair down unnecessary via/shaping points for routes that are part of my long term collection. I can put together a 200 mile route with ease in 15 minutes or so. For now I’m using Montanas and Basecamp but also researching my options.īasecamp isn’t intuitive at first but once the GPS and Basecamp profiles have the proper settings it gets easier. Other interesting Mac alternatives to QMapShack are QLandkarte GT, Viking GPS data editor and analyzer, Garmin BaseCamp and GpsPrune. ![]() Garmin knew it and took full advantage of their market position putting profits over customers and quality. The lumbering, slow to react, indifferent company didn’t see smartphones and apps biting off a chunk of their business or they don’t care. If that doesnt suit you, our users have ranked more than 10 alternatives to QMapShack and seven of them are available for Mac so hopefully you can find a suitable replacement. QMapShack is the next generation of the famous QLandkarte GT application. Prior to smartphones you were stuck with Garmin or similar devices. Qmapshack Windows Its in 'Files', 'Set up map paths'. As soon as the realization hit that it is a simply a database with lists of pointers to the data being used for a given route it made sense. After using Mapsource since 1999 I switched to Basecamp and hated it too. ![]()
